EDIDesK - Year 1 Report and Year 2 Outlook

December 13, 2024

EDIDesK ‘Open Access Contents on Design for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion for Higher Education Programmes’ (Erasmus+ KA220-HED) is a three-year project aimed at enhancing European Higher Education Design programs by integrating Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles. The project focuses on equipping future graduates with the skills to design inclusive and diverse solutions through the development of open access, multilingual educational content and inclusive digital tools. EDIDesK seeks to improve Design studies and ensure graduates are prepared for the evolving demands of the design industry in the context of EDI.

Key Achievements in Year 1

Completion of WP2: Research and analysis of teaching contents on Design and EDI

WP leader: ASP - Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach (Poland)

Research and Analysis on Design and EDI - The project successfully completed the WP2, which involved mapping existing teaching practices and methodologies in EDI within Design programs. Key deliverables included a comprehensive analysis of EDI contents in Italy, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain, a review of available teaching methods and tools for inclusive learning, and recommendations for integrating EDI content into digital environments (WP2 outcomes here):

Launch of WP3: Development of the EU Framework on 'Design for EDI'

WP leader: STU - Slovenská technická univerzita v Bratislave (Slovakia)

Following WP2, EDIDesK initiated the WP3, which is focused on creating a generalized EU teaching framework for 'Design for EDI.' WP3 will develop replicable methodologies for EDI-focused educational contents across design fields and produce accessible materials for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The framework will undergo pilot testing with students and stakeholders in four European countries to ensure inclusivity and coherence. To do this, on October 25, 2024, the  project partners hosted a workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice to dive deeper into Activity 3.1: Developing a Generalized Teaching Framework on Design for EDI.

WP5: Dissemination, outreach, and engagement with relevant stakeholders in EU and beyond

WP leader: UNIFI - Università degli Studi di Firenze (Italy)

In the first year, the project’s communication objectives and identity were established. The official website and a social campaign were launched, alongside targeted communications through partners' channels like Cumulus Association and EIDD - Design for All Europe.. Highlights included lectures at universities in Lincoln (UK), San Marino (SMR), and Florence (IT), and a featured session at the International Congress on Educational Quality (ICEQ) Congress in Katowice, Poland, on October 24, 2024 (organized by: Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice), titled "Designing for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Higher Education," the session showcased EDI best practices and the role of digital tools in enhancing educational quality.

Key Achievements planned for year 2

WP4: Design and implementation of an open access digital learning platform on 'Design for EDI'

Starting in mid-2025, WP4 will develop a digital platform for sharing open-access multilingual content on Design for EDI. Built on the results of WP2 and WP3, the platform aims to foster inclusiveness in higher education.
